We Care Cambodia
"We Care Cambodia" is a not for profit charity whose primary focus is on building and sustaining a partnership with the rural villages surrounding Kol Thmey, near Beng Mealea to provide educational and welfare support in areas such as improving water quality, free English language tuition, access to solar power, and tertiary education sponsorships.
We Know...We Care...We Act
Overview
With a partnership beginning in 2009, a community education centre is nearing completion at Kol Thmey. Children and adults are learning English, and awaiting potential future sponsorships to study post secondary at universities in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. "Empowerment through Education" is our mantra.
History
Over the past 7 years a parntership has grown with the people of the village of Kol Thmey 7 km from the temple ruins of Beng Melea. They have welcomed visitors from over 10 different countries who have had the opportunity to witness traditional rural Cambodian life, and make contributions involving such things as clothing donations, provision of solar lamps, English language building activities, and water filters.
In 2013 a simple classroom building was constructed to provide after school English classes to a group of up to 40 students. A Khmer teacher is paid on an hourly basis. A community centre also offering accommodation for volunteers along with toilet and kitchen facilities commenced construction midway through 2013.
In 2014 we sponsored our first student, Hean from Kol Thmey to study at a university in Siem Reap. His sponsorship covers his study and living costs. We are pleased to report that Hean now has a job working for a Micro financing bank in Siem Reap and he wants to help give back to his community by also assiting us with our accounting. We would like to offer similar sponsorships to other local students.
Visitors
Our community centre at Kol Thmey can now house up to 30 people in long house accommodation for a village stay that gives visiting students a chance to not only help out with our activities and projects but also to learn about the Khmer culture.

The Future
Our socially responsible and sustainable partnership will continue to provide a community library facility including computer access, tertiary sponsorships, training of local teachers, and health education.
Students and visitors from other countries will have the opportunity to experience rural Khmer village life, appreciate local cuisine, and contribute to our programs. These service learning opportunities will be significant and sustainable.
